The Servicio Madrileño de Salud (SERMAS), together with its linked third-party Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (FIBH12O), coordinates the EMPIRICAL project and its Consortium.

About SERMAS & FIBH12O
Collaboration between SERMAS and FIBH12O is carried out through a prior collaboration agreement, by means of which the latter handles the financial and administrative aspects of the Hospital’s involvement in research projects.

The Centro de Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (i+12) has a huge experience with management of funds for research for many years participating in more than 580 clinical trials registered in clinicaltrials.gov. At a scientific level, the I+12 has a total of 47 research groups, structured in eight major scientific areas. The Paediatric Infectious Disease group has CMV, TB and HIV infections as some of its main lines of research.

PABLO ROJOPrincipal Investigator

Professor Pablo Rojo, M.D., Ph.D. is the Chief Investigator of EMPIRICAL. He is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist of Hospital 12 de Octubre where runs the Children and Adolescents HIV Paediatric Clinic. His main research activities are related to HIV, S. aureus and congenital CMV infection. He participates as a Technical advisor for Pediatric HIV for Spanish and Equatorial Guinea Governments and has also advised WHO in Pediatric HIV treatment.

ALFREDO TAGARROTrial Coordinator

Alfredo Tagarro is the Clinical Trial Coordinator. He is a Medical Doctor, PhD in Medicine, Specialist in Pediatrics, High Degree in Tropical Medicine. He is a Clinical Researcher at Fundación Hospital 12 de Octubre and Associate Professor in Universidad Europea of Madrid. He has clinical experience in Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology and Critical patients.

SARA DOMÍNGUEZData Scientist

Sara Domínguez is BSC in Biology (5y), MSc in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics by Universidad de Barcelona-UOC. Principal Data Manager and Biostatistician in Hospital Universitario 12 Octubre in Madrid, Spain. Wide experience in R programming and statistical inference. Knowledge in regression modelling, survival models and HIV.

CINTA MORALEDA Scientific Coordinator

Cinta Moraleda M.D, Ph.D. is the scientific coordinator of EMPIRICAL. She is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist of Hospital 12 de Octubre. She has a Ph.D. in Global Health and has expended more than eight years working in Mozambique, Morocco and Nicaragua combining clinical activities with the coordination of research projects in the field of pediatric infectious diseases.

LUIS PRIETOSafety Coordinator

Luis Prieto is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist of Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain. He obtained his Ph.D. from Complutense University in 2016. He is mainly focused on HIV infection in children. He has participated in clinical trials from PENTA and observational studies from EPPICC and COHERE. He is experienced as technical advisor for HIV in Spain but also in low resource settings, as Equatorial Guinea. He is author and coauthor of over 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles.

LILIT MANUKYANProject Manager

Lilit Manukyan PhD, PMP® is the Project Manager. She is PMP certified since 2013. Philologist per training she received her Master’s degree in Project Management at AEDE and trainings at IE and IESE Business Schools. She got her Ph.D. in 2015 and during these last few years she has been a liaison between scientists and financial agencies. She has more than 10 years of program management experience, possessing strong understanding of research and innovation programs.
